russians hit two children's hospitals in Kyiv
On July 8, russian terrorists attacked Ukraine's largest children's hospital, Okhmatdyt, with missiles. Five medical facility buildings (including the newest one, which was opened amid a full-scale war) were damaged. One of the buildings collapsed and was destroyed. In addition, the Children's Cardiac Surgery Center building was damaged.
During the attack, medical facilities were undergoing the surgeries. Minister of Health Viktor Liashko said that the explosion had blown out windows in the operating rooms. One child who was on the surgical table was injured by glass in the chest area. Currently, doctors at another hospital are saving the life of the child.
As a result of the missile attack, there are injured and dead, but the information about their number is constantly being updated – all emergency services are working on the scene of the attack, and rescue work is ongoing.
“There are several crucial tasks now. The first one is to demolish the destroyed toxicology building where children were treated with artificial kidneys. The second one is to evacuate the building that was also damaged, where the departments of oncohematology, oncology, surgery, and traumatology were located. We are taking the children to other hospitals step by step, as there is no electricity, oxygen, or water supply at Okhmatdyt. Our task is to minimize potential negative consequences for patients who were treated here.”
Minister Liashko also thanked everyone who joined forces to help everyone affected:
“All hospitals in Kyiv and other regions are ready to help us. We evacuate entire departments to relocate doctors who can treat complex pathologies of Okhmatdyt patients. We are also working to restart the buildings with laboratories, because Okhmatdyt provides unique laboratory services that, unfortunately, not many other facilities in the country can provide.”
